The season’s most prominent fashion highlight are the gorgeous and elegant tassel hijabs. And, if you are anything like me with heaps of hijabs falling off your wardrobe or not ready to spend on one more expensive hijab. You are at the right place my lovely ladies, these DIY tassels can spike up an old hijab in just few minutes,
- An old Hijab/Scarf
- Embroidery floss/Yarn/Cords
- Needle Threader
- Clear Nail Polish
- Big eye Needle
- Card Board/Fork
- Measuring Tape
Optional: Beads and Chains
Based upon the length preference of your tassel you can either use a fork (for mini tassels) or a cardboard cutting (to create longer tassels)
To get started cut a 8 inch (Purple) and 15 inch (Yellow) embroidery floss each. The former which will be used to attach the tassel to your hijab while the latter will be wrapped around the tassel.
Method 1 Using Fork
Start wrapping the embroidery floss over the fork as shown in the picture. I ended up wrapping it 50 to 60 times for a fluffy thick tassel.
Remove the wrapped embroidery floss from the fork and with the help of scissors cut the middle. Next tie a knot in the middle of your tassel using the purple thread.
Create your tassel by folding it in half and wrapping the yellow thread around the tassel a few time about a half inch from the top. Apply a drop of clear nail polish on the knot tied with the yellow thread and trim off the excess.
Method 2 Cardboard Cutting
As shown in the picture, trace and cut similar lines on the cardboard. Place the purple thread between A and B cuts. Next place one end of the embroidery floss on the point C so that it secures the thread while you wrap it around the cardboard. (Width of the cardboard decides the length of the tassels).
Slide in the yellow thread (15-inch cord) through point D and tie a knot in the middle so that the tassels when removed from the cardboard are leveled. Snip the end of tassels at point C and take off the tassel from the cardboard.
Create your tassel by tieing the top with the purple thread and wrapping the remaining yellow thread around the tassel. For a more finished look gently push a big eye needle through up till the top of the tassel as illustrate in the pictures above and pull the Yellow thread back through it one at a time. Lastly, trim the edges with a sharp scissors for an even look.
How To Attach Tassel to Hijab?
Adding your tassel to your hijab is very easy. Push a needle threader (you can even use a big eye needle) into your hijab and thread in the remaining purple thread into your hijab separately. Lastly, tie several double knots at the back of your hijab and snip off the excess. You can add different types of beads to your tassels before threading them into your hijab.
Now ladies have fun adding this elegant piece of art to your hijabs or even cardigans. And if you do try this DIY, I would love to see the variations and your creativity just #rthijabstyles along your pictures.
Stay tuned for the next post where I show how to style these gorgeous pieces. ❤
